Help Send LTU DECA to the 2018 State & International Conferences
What is LTU Collegiate DECA?
LTU DECA is a student business organization on campus. We are a group of ten students who have interest in business administration, marketing, finance, hospitality, tourism, and entrepreneurship. While most of our members are business administration majors, we have biomedical engineering and computer science majors interested in the entrepreneurial mindset that DECA encourages. We are leaders in our degree programs who joined this organization in order to better ourselves, and to gain competitive experience in the business world. Since LTU DECA began last year we have sent students to conferences at the state and international level and hope to do the same this year. Our organization has also been involved with outreach events and assisting with events that occur on campus.
LTU DECA is sending some of our members to the State DECA conference in Grand Rapids Michigan this year. Our members will be competing in their respective disciplines against other students from different colleges in the state. Last year we sent 5 of our members and in our first year competing took home numerous awards. Due to our success at this conference we also qualified three of our members for the international conference in California. This year we hope the attending members will experience the same success at the state level so we can send them to Washington, D.C. for the international conference once again.
These conferences present our members with valuable competitive experience and networking opportunities with other students and professionals from all over the world. These experiences will allow us to become better students, and then professionals as we enter the workforce. However we are asking for your help to make these opportunities possible for us. Below is a further description of what the conferences/competitions are all about, in addition to how much it costs our members to travel to and participate in them.
Levels of Competition
Competitive events are in the career clusters of marketing, business administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism. Students will participate in a written component of an exam or report and an interactive component with an industry professional serving as a judge. During the Career Development Conferences students are able to establish networking skills with the industry professionals as well as their peers from around the world.
State Career Development Conference
Grand Rapids, MI
In the State Career Development Conference we have students competing in Corporate Finance, Professional Sales, Travel & Tourism, and Hospitality.
When students place into the top three in their event category they move on to the International Career Development Conference to compete against other students globally.
Last year we had students compete in Business Ethics, Retail Management, Executive Interview, Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Corporate Finance, and Professional Sales. We had a first place finish in the Executive Interview event, in addition to this we had one second place finish, three third place finishes, and two other top five's.
Our members were also able to network at the events put on at the conference, where they met students and professionals also attending the conference.
Total cost per student for the entire weekend is about $300.
International Career Development Conference
At the International Conference our members will be able to compete against the best students from across the country and around the world who also qualified for this stage. To qualify to compete at this level students had to place in the top three in their state competition. In addition to competing, the conference has networking events and guest speakers which provide the students with valuable lessons they have learned throughout their business careers.
This is an opportunity for our members to travel to another part of the country and showcase their skills and knowledge against the best of the best. In addition to this, our students attending and succeeding at international competition will help put LTU's College of Management on the global map.
Total cost per student for the entire week is about $1,500.
Thank you for your support!
Funds raised above and beyond our goal will be used to support other future DECA activities. Should our members not qualify to attend the international conference, funds raised beyond those needed to cover state conference expenses will also be used to support future activities.
