Destination Toronto: Get the LTU Concrete Toboggan to Toronto

We are competing in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race, which is a multidisciplinary engineering competition held in Canada. This will be the 6th year that Lawrence Technological University will be competing in the GNCTR competition. Each year our team of students from all different backgrounds, build a new concrete toboggan to compete against 20+ Canadian teams. We are the only team from the United States who competes and this year’s competition will be held in Toronto, Canada (pictured below).

What is a Concrete Toboggan?

It is metal superstructure that holds 5 team members, and slides down a snowy steep incline on concrete running surface. Points are awarded based on technical reports, presentations, design concepts, construction quality, and race day performance. Every toboggan must have a theme, and in previous years LTU has gone as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" "Toy Story" "Scooby Doo" and "00 Sleddin" and the "Batmobile (pictured top left). This years preliminary design is (pictured bottom right) based off of the Model-T, where we will aim to recreate its unique shape, and bring the lifestyle of the Roaring 20's to competition.

Race Day Events

Drag Race:

Compete in solo time trial run to see how fast your toboggan can go. Utilize the braking system at the end of the run.

Slalom Race:

Compete in a solo time trial run to see how well your toboggan can steer through obstacles down the slope. Utilize the braking system at the end of the run.

King of the Hill:

Compete in side-by-side drag races against teams that qualified, in a bracket style format. Races are ran until one team remains  "King of the Hill." Utilize braking system at the end of each run.

Within the last two years, we have won the following awards:

  • Best Performing Toboggan
  • King of the Hill
  • Best Steering Performance
  • Most Improved Team
  • 3rd in Tech Display

Why Donate?

Due to international traveling and a highly ambitious design, the cost of the competition is significant, and the team is seeking additional funding. Your donation will not go unnoticed! Be sure to check out the different levels of donations to view the perks for each one. As a team, we have grown from eight members to fourteen members! We are humbled to be invited back every year to compete against some of the best students Canada has to offer, and we could not do anything if it was not for the generous support of our donors! We want to thank you in advance for taking the time to learn about our team, and to thank you for donating as well!
